I'm certainly aware of the fact that I really don't have to ask providers to step aside for a moment while I direct these thoughts to worker bees. Now don't be offended. I'm a worker bee. We're all worker bees at one level or another. Some of us just don't know it, but we all work for somebody.
Sometimes, though, we just need someone to speak directly into our lives -- not in a round-about way, but head on, face-to-face. Sometimes we just need someone to poke their finger in our chest, look us in the eye and tell us "without you, your boss couldn't survive; without you, businesses that depend on this business would bust; without you, patients would hightail it out of here and go to the provider down the street; without you, the worker next to you would hate to come to work because your presence has made all the difference in this place. Yes, your presence has made all the difference in this place!"
C'mon, now. You know you need to hear that, but you also know you can pretty much expect not to hear that. Well, it's just life. Bosses, unfortunately, do not take the time to really appreciate their workers. We're trying our best to speak into their lives about the importance of their staff, but there's so much more you can do.
Believe me when I tell you that you can change the world by changing your world. That's right. Change the environment you live in. Transform the atmosphere around you. If you want to be appreciated, learn to appreciate. If you want to be respected, respect others. Treat people the way you want to be treated, and you will not only change your world, but you will change the world. Amazing!
I know, I know. I hear you. You hate your job; your boss; your co-workers; life; and you name it. No, you don't. You're unhappy because you haven't really found your niche in life yet. You're unhappy because you just don't know where you belong. You're unhappy because you want to be appreciated but you haven't yet learned that you need to first appreciate others. It's going to be okay. A few little tips here and you will change your world.
See, if you're willing to give that much power to those around you then you have to be willing to be miserable. If you want to enjoy life, your job, and others, you need an attitude adjustment, that's all. Take responsibility for your own joy. It's not about what others can do for you. Life is all about what you do for others; what you give away. The greatest treasures you will find in life are found when you give away treasures. Crazy backwards, I know, but true.
Try this for a week. Tell your boss how much you appreciate your job. Tell a co-worker how much they mean to you; how important they are to you; how much easier they've made your job. Bake something -- give it to a co-worker or a boss. Buy donuts, give them away. Give someone a thank you card. Tell a patient how much you love to see them. If you want your world to change, you're going to have to be the one to change it.
Life doesn't have to be this hard. The best solutions are always the simplest.
